Mission
The Institute for Manufacturing Systems coordinates research, education and international engagement in the broad area of manufacturing systems and advanced manufacturing. The institute boasts an array of Texas A&M University experts, professional partners and facilities, and serves as a focus for manufacturing research and education initiatives that spans additive, hybrid and smart manufacturing, data science, robotics, precision material removal and forming processes, and nanomaterial and composites processing.
The term “manufacturing” is used in its broadest sense and encompasses all aspects related to the production and distribution of goods, including product and process design, as well as engineering, operations, marketing, sales and product life cycle management.
Background
The Institute for Manufacturing Systems was established two decades ago with a primary focus in conducting both basic and applied research in advanced manufacturing, and providing technical assistance and training services to manufacturing companies, particularly in the small- and medium-scale enterprises, both at the regional and national levels.
During the past seven years, Texas A&M Engineering has emerged as the home to one of the largest and most vibrant manufacturing groups in the nation. Its scientific members and collaborators now include over 40 colleagues representing several academic departments and units.
The institute has been successful in securing sponsored research projects and grants since its inception, and in recent years, it has played a central role in the coordination of various manufacturing-focused initiatives for Texas A&M Engineering. These include establishment of a common facility for advanced manufacturing in the emerging technologies building leveraging Texas A&M University’s research development fund in 2016, organization of the joint Manufacturing Science and Engineering Conference (MSEC) and North American Manufacturing Research Conference (NAMRC) (American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, MSEC-NAMRC) with over 800 delegates, and initiation of USA-France AM2 partnership with Arts et Métiers.
This website provides a brief background to the diverse portfolio of the institute, the emerging opportunities, as well as initiatives undertaken to address the growing societal needs in advanced manufacturing.
